Volunteers are shown how to correctly and safely lift and carry Christmas trees. Follow OC Connection’s manual handling policies.
Volunteers are not made to lift trees if unable to and can leave the task to the person purchasing the tree.
2. Injury due to scratching from tree or cutting of tree Wear gloves, closed shoes and suitable clothing.
Volunteers not to cut trees (left to staff). First aid kit available in Christmas Shop.
3. Evacuation due to an emergency e.g. fire Follow the evacuation procedures and all instructions given by the organisation
4. Slipping due to wet floor Trees to be watered with watering can, keep water to tree bases.
Place signs around areas.
5. Truck coming onto premises Volunteers to be educated to keep clear of car park and drive way.
Barriers to be placed around truck when trees to be delivered.
6. Sun exposure and dehydration Volunteers asked to bring own water bottles. Water cooler on-site.
Sunscreen on-site.
7. Trips, falls Walkways kept clear, ground to be razed prior to set up. Volunteers to be given recommended clothing list (with appropriate footwear).

Ensure that the activities are set up in clear areas and water activities are set up in areas to reduce slips, trips and falls. Volunteers to monitor potential areas for slips, trips and falls and clean up items as needed. Have first aid kit available

3. Injuries due to lifting / carrying heavy items Volunteers will be instructed to use correct lifting techniques when moving / filling containers and trays with water / other materials. Volunteers to ask for assistance if required. Ensure at least two people carry large black trays if needed to be moved. 
4. Sun – hot sun causing sunburn, sunstroke and dehydration

Volunteers to wear hats/ suncream. Set up activities in shade where possible, including the use of gazebos. In the event of extreme high temperature the event will be cancelled (over 35 degrees). Water provided for volunteers to drink throughout the sessions.
